Ask anyone in Charleston with seasonal allergies which month is worst and you will hear two answers. Some say spring, when the oaks and pines coat every car on the peninsula in yellow. Keep windows closed during peak morning hours, roughly dawn through mid morning, when ragweed releases most heavily. Shower and change clothes after time outdoors rather than carrying pollen into the bedroom, which is where you spend the most consecutive hours breathing. Keep indoor humidity between forty and fifty percent so you are not fighting mold at the same time. And make sure the air actually moving through your house is being treated rather than merely recirculated.
Why Filtration Alone Falls Short in Fall
A better filter helps, and it is worth having. But a filter only works on air that passes through it, and in a typical Charleston home the system cycles rather than running continuously, especially in October when outdoor temperatures moderate and the air conditioner asks for less. Less runtime means less filtration exactly when allergen load is high.
